Walgett


Walgett is the rural service centre for an enormous pastoral area which stretches to the state border. The town is located by the Namoi River near its junction with the Barwon River in northern New South Wales .. using scrapers, bulldozers, graders and water carts constructed the first permanent levee bank in Australia. It was 8.2 km long.

Distance and the lack of transport ensured that a gaol was needed at Walgett. The Gaol established in the 1880's once stood in Gray Park, surrounded by high brick walls made at the Walgett Brick Works. The well from which water was drawn for the gaol is fenced in the centre of the park with a plaque. This gaol was on this site from 1881 to 1966.
